Taking a genre-based approach to teaching writing skills

Teaching students to write often does not extend beyond grammatical and lexical features. However, let us not forget that writing is an act of communication aimed at the audience.
The ability to teach students the importance of knowing contexts and purposes is paramount to successful language education especially in academic and businesses contexts.

One good place to start is with something known as the Genre-based Approach to writing instruction. It is aimed at linking language, context, and purpose (e.g. writing an essay as academic task vs writing a report to the supervisor). In he session we are going to discuss how to develop this fundamental language skill which is also integral for preparing students for such exams as IELTS, Cambridge and Russian State exams.
